The Pin-Up Problem

When it comes to art, I'm of the notion that skill and technique take precedence over subject matter. If you can draw a bowl and practically replicate it like a damn photograph, you've got my respect, as opposed to say drawing disturbing pin-ups of ponies. To that end, regardless of what I'm drawing I try my hardest to present something with style and a professional approach to detail.
However this does nothing to dispel the stigma behind my Pin-Up work, but in all honestly it's not unjustified. For if one could go low brow in terms of art and rake in viewers by the hundreds, all one has to do is draw tits and asses. You don't have to be exceptionally skilled in anatomy, all you have to do is draw the T and the A absurdly huge, so you can hide all the areas you're not very good at drawing behind other pieces of flesh.

This is not me saying that drawing Pin-Ups is wrong in my eyes, more of the fact that FANS of Pin-up work make it all too easy. My old art teacher never submitted his work or even liked DA because he said that he never saw any valuable critics, he didn't see it as an a constructive environment. He did have a point though, if I were to mimic what was popular and what rakes in the watchers by the thousands, I would cease to grow as an artist if I did something that I was absolutely sure that everyone was going to like.
I think I've been going on about "growing as an artist" for a while now, when in actuality what I want is to speed it up. Because growth in inevitable, even an artist working at a particular style will either refine it or get faster at producing it and it gets better as time goes on. Practice makes perfect as they say.

When it comes to artists on DA, there are basically two types. Ones who display masterful skill, an ability to make you stare in awe... at a bowl of fruit. The other draws anime/furry characters and slaps big titties on them. Both are incredibly popular for different reasons, generally one is appraised for their skill the other for their subject matter. The problem therein with the latter is that if they stop drawing the big titties, people won't stay around to like your attempt at fruit, unless you get back to drawing the other kind of Melons. The former has nothing to fear, they can draw what they please, and people will consume it regardless.

What I want is to be revered for my skill as opposed to what I draw. But I'm not stupid; it isn't going to happen overnight. It's something I have to constantly remind myself; not yet. Every time I try and break out of the DD mould and see it fall flat, it's hard not to be discouraged. All I can do is follow my old teacher's advice; "If you keep on practicing what you've learned, then you'll be too good to be ignored".

So in the mean time, yes I will continue to draw titties, BUT, I will still be working on my big Comic idea. Like so...

I agree with a lot of points that you raise. I just cant bring myself to draw Pin-ups and other smut that would most likely get a lot of views and favorites. I just keep drawing, and practicing new techniques, slowly getting more skilled. (In my own opinion, at least).

But I mean, In one year (August 2011 - June 2012 [11th grade year]), I made more progress then I have from when I started (7th Grade) to 10th Grade.
